"Cunningham had begun to compose songs and poetry at an early age and in 1798 ‘The Har'st Kirn’ (‘harvest home’) was published in Brash and Reid's Poetry, Original and Selected. About 1800 he moved to Wiltshire, and soon afterwards to Cambridgeshire, where he wrote ‘The Hills o' Gallowa’, one of his most popular songs, which has been attributed by some to Burns. At about this time he also wrote ‘The Cambridgeshire Garland’ and ‘The Unco Grave’." (ODNB)
